Gispen deckchair no.404
N.V.Gispen, Culemborg, The Netherlands 1936/1937
Red-copper plated steel frame with extension springs and bakelite armrests, quilted cushion upholstered with a woolen fabric. Dim.: 55 x 92 x 85 cm.
William Gispen was asked to design some parts of the interior of the luxurious new passenger ship, the s.s. ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ from the Holland America line in 1936. For the use on deck, he designed a reclining chair with a stable frame and a comfortable cushion resting on extension springs. The armchair was introduced as model no.404 in the default Gispen program in 1937 and was produced in a slightly modified version up until 1966.
The chair here on offer is a very rare version made in the interwar period with a red copper plated frame instead of the usual chrome finishing.
