An impression of our booth no.5

Modern interwar period interior with works of Auping, Gispen and Kamerlingh Onnes

Original works of the Dutch painter and ceramist Bart van der Leck with modernist furniture.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, August 2023

This summer, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam purchased the masterpiece from our ceramics collection by Bart van der Leck; a monumental vase with rectangular elements on which Van der Leck has personally applied an abstract decor of geometric figures.

The way in which he has applied the geometric figures here is reminiscent of the architectural assignments (interior and exterior) that Van der Leck made for the department store Metz&Co and in collaboration with the architect Piet Elling, in which he used color planes on walls and doors to create an interaction between art-painting and architecture.

Brafa Brussels
January 29 – February 5, 2023

Last year we were asked to participate in one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious art fairs; de Brafa in Brussels

We look back with a good feeling on this first participation with: enthusiastic reactions from organization and visitors; some nice sales;
interesting new contacts; and publicity at home and abroad, including an interview in a live broadcast of the VRT from the fair.

An exciting and good beginning of 2023!

The theme of our booth at BRAFA 2023 was ‘Dutch Modernism’

A Lithograph by Bart van der Leck 1919, with the ‘Berlin Chair’ by Gerrit Th. Rietveld 1923 and hanging lamp Giso No23 1927 by W.H. Gispen.

One of the highlights of our booth at BRAFA:
a small but very exclusive collection of Ceramics designed and made in by the Dutch painter, ceramist and designer Bart van der Leck, one of the most influential members of the Dutch Esthetic movement ‘De Stijl’

The ceramics were shown together with the original colored design drawings.

The MFAH, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas USA, purchased a rare ceramic plate by Van der Leck from us at BRAFA.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
Amsterdam, April 2021 – September 2022

Purchase of an exceptional modernist desk ensemble

A modernist desk ensemble that was offered to us by the private collector to whom we had previously sold it was purchased from us by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in April 2021.

The ensemble designed by the Dutch designer W.H. Gispen, can be called exceptional for several reasons. The fact that it has been in use as an ensemble by different owners for over 85 years is in itself reason to call it exceptional. In addition, all individual parts are notable for their rarity, originality and their excellent original condition.

After acquisition the ensemble has been put on display at the museum immediately and is presented with a focus on Riek van de Griend.

Riek van de Griend was a designer of Bauhaus-like fabrics, knotted modern rugs and engaged in modern dance. In the second half of the 1930s she would have a major influence on W.H. Gispen’s private life and the designs and presentation of the Gispen products. This desk ensemble is a silent witness of this development.

This ensemble has been on display for over a year, but is now stored safely in the Rijksmuseum-depot.
Nevertheless we would like to encourage you while visiting the museum to also take a look at the 20th century department.

We gave these objects on temporary loan so they could be displayed at the exhibition ‘De Stijl: Theo van Doesburg & Contemporaries’.

Read all about our ‘Steltmanchair’ >

Through works by famous artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondriaan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bart van der Leck, JJP Oud and WH Gispen, the exhibition showed the influence of the members of the aesthetic movement ‘De Stijl’ over artists and artistic movements in The Netherlands and abroad. Several objects had never been shown to the public before.

KVHOK Course ‘Art & Antiques in Practice’
September 14, 2021

In the ‘Art & Antiques in Practice’ course, renowned art dealers, often known for their performances on national television, share their unique knowledge and experience. The students gather in the gallery of the antiquarian or art dealer; In addition, museums, art fairs or restoration studios are visited.

On September 14, some of the students visited our gallery.

A mixed group of art historians, a restorer and police officials from the ‘art crime’ department, sitting among the objects from our collection, became acquainted with the phenomenon of 20th century design or deepened their existing knowledge.

Extensive attention was also paid to an important space next to our gallery, our own restoration workshop.
